Today was kind of an up-and-down day. Some good stuff mixed in with some concerning stuff. As mentioned earlier another echo cardiogram was done today. They did sedate Kaelyn and we could definitely tell that she was out of it while we were hanging out with her. Normally, she isn't wide awake and moving all over the place, but still, she wasn't herself. She didn't even fuss when I took her temperature, like she always does. So, that was kind of a bummer, but hey, we enjoyed the visit.

We don't really know the results of the echo but, we were told that depending on what happens at the conference on Wednesday, she could have surgery this week. The good news is that they think that she is doing well enough that she could handle it. The bad news.....she has to have surgery. We aren't terribly worried because, according to the NP, it is a pretty routine surgery. They say it only takes about 20 mins. So that is a little bit comforting, but still surgery. The procedure will consist of them going in through her back/armpit, through the ribs and then to the PDA with a little clip that will clamp the PDA closed. Then, they should be able to see how her small pulmonary artery reacts and make adjustments as necessary. We're not sure if they will put a shunt in right then or not (if needed) but hopefully they don't have to do two surgeries. So, once again, we are playing the waiting game. At least this time it's only a couple of days.

Hi there,

I saw your blog on a friend of mine's page. My daughter was born at 26 weeks - 1 pound, 6 ounces and 12 inches!

She, too, had to have the PDA surgery. I remember being scared to death of it, but the NP is right - it's very routine and very fast. When the surgeon came to get me after, I remember thinking something had gone wrong because it was that fast!

If you want to check our my daughter's blog from when she was in the NICU it's at

www.babyhomepages.net/babyjones

I'm sure as you continue through this journey, you will read many entries from me there that you can relate to.

Since being home from the NICU, we are now blogging at www.keepingupwith-thejoneses.blogspot.com

Your little girl is beautiful. I'll be praying for her and you guys too.

By the way, all the nurses called my little girl feisty too! That is definitely a good thing in the NICU! :)

Once again the feisty one will show you the way.Look how far she has come already!I know you are scared. These are scary times on the roller coaster of the NICU ride.Wild, crazy, unpredictable but doable and you ARE doing it.Beautifully.Praying for your little love.

Feisty is a good thing. Being feisty brings our kiddos through so much.
None the less, it's scary for us parents. Knowing our kids have to have surgery, even if they say its fairly routine. It's still surgery. However, we must trust those NP's, they do know their stuff!
We'll be praying for you all.

PDA ligation is definitely not bad. But always scary, expecially when they are so little. But she is so strong you can tell. If you email me at laceyrugg@hotmail.com I'll send you some pics of Jax PDA scar and surgery. If that doesn't scare you, but its really not bad. And I also know that a lot of preemies without heart problems need this done, so its done a lot in tiny babies.

Just found your blog--what a spunky girl you have! She is amazing!

I have a friend whose daughter was born at 1 lb 6 oz, with similar medical challenges and she is now 6 and doing great!

Keep charging Kaelyn!
